Mad Money Media covers advertising, sponsorships, subscriptions, and every other way independent creators and publishers actually get paid, with real figures instead of highlight reels.
Mad Money Media covers how digital publishers, creators, podcasts, newsletters, and social platforms actually pay their bills. Not the highlight-reel version. The version with platform fees, ad-blocker math, and the unpaid hours that never show up in a screenshot.
We started this site because most creator-economy coverage either promises a shortcut or reads like a press release. Neither one tells you what a 5,000-download podcast episode is actually worth to a sponsor, or why a newsletter with 12,000 free subscribers might still be losing money. We try to answer those questions with real numbers instead of vibes.
Our writers have run newsletters, sold their own ad inventory, negotiated sponsorship rates, and made pricing mistakes worth writing about. That's the standard for what runs here: if a claim can't be sourced or reasonably estimated, it doesn't get published as fact.
Every week we cover seven areas of the creator and publishing economy, from advertising revenue and brand sponsorships to newsletter and podcast monetization. Each one gets treated as its own business model with its own math, not folded into generic "how to make money online" advice. A podcast's CPM math has almost nothing in common with a newsletter's subscriber churn curve, and we'd rather cover each one properly than flatten them into one generic playbook.
That also means we spend real time on the parts of this industry that don't make for good highlight reels. Platform fee structures change without much notice. Ad-blocker adoption varies wildly by niche and hits some publishers far harder than others. A six-figure gross revenue number can still leave a creator with a thin margin once software costs, contractor fees, and self-employment tax are subtracted, and we think readers deserve to see that math laid out rather than glossed over.
We're not against optimism about this industry. Plenty of independent creators and small publishers do build real, sustainable businesses. We just think the path there is clearer when the actual costs and platform cuts are on the table from the start, instead of discovered the hard way a year in.
If you're building an audience, running a publication, or just trying to figure out whether your favorite podcast is actually profitable, you're in the right place. We don't guarantee income and we don't promise virality. We just try to explain, clearly, how the money actually moves, and we name our sources when we cite outside data instead of asking you to take a number on faith.
